这是一部悲剧色彩浓重的电影，只因它出自契诃夫之手，电影开头讲述是爷孙俩到镇上卖马的故事。剧情发展也比较慢，卖马之后被两个杀手盯上，爷爷为了救男孩，拦住杀手，结果是人财两空。男孩逃到一户人家，不幸的是杀手的家，杀手以为熟睡的是男孩，一斧头下去杀死了自己的女儿。结局杀手互相残杀而死。
